Welcome/ BienvenidosHello, I'm Ms. Poon, and I am the 10th Grade English Language Arts teacher at Bloomfield High School.
On this website, you can contact me, see our class syllabus, find course materials, and access online resources. My goal is to challenge students to grow in their literacy skills! Together, we will achieve these goals. Hopefully, we can read some books you will love, too! |
I taught English in Boyle Heights, East Los Angeles from 2015-2019. I love East L.A., where I grew a lot both as a teacher and an educator.
I was born nearby in Pasadena, California, but I lived in Memphis, Tennessee most of my life. I completed my undergraduate degree at the University of Memphis, where I studied English with a concentration in English as a Second Language and also received a minor in German Language studies. I learned a lot about literature and literacy through my coursework. I earned my teaching credential at Loyola Marymount University.
Although I learned a lot at my university, I learned even more from working in my community. I worked in a community center in Binghampton, where I taught English to refugee immigrants. During my years as a student, I worked as a housekeeper, a server, a bookstore customer service representative, a record store clerk, and a receptionist. These different roles taught me the value of hard work and perserverance.
I am excited to live in Los Angeles, where my father grew up since his family immigrated from Hong Kong. I love learning about people's stories--where their family comes from, and the things and people that they love. I can't wait to learn all about you/ your student, and all that we will do together.
Here are some quotes by authors that I love:
“If you only read the books that everyone else is reading, you can only think what everyone else is thinking.”
― Haruki Murakami, Norwegian Wood
"Every writer I know has trouble writing."
― Joseph Heller, author of Catch 22
“But if these years have taught me anything it is this: you can never run away. Not ever. The only way out is in.”
“You can't regret the life you didn't lead.”
― Junot Díaz, The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao
